Leonardo Dog-inci
In Okami you play as a wolf God Amaterasu who has to go through a delightfully colourful world overtaken by dark forces and try and revive each region with your skills and miniature companion. The game utilises a unique system where a press of a button freezes everything on screen and allows you to use your analogue stick to draw specific brush strokes that can affect things on the screen. This includes brush strokes to attack enemies and brush strokes to open locked boxes. Although fun to use, this mechanic became quite frustrating as I found that I had to keep repeating the same brush strokes over and over again in order for the game to register them to the correct on-screen subject. This was made worse considering that a lot of the
brush strokes were similar to each other so half the time I’d end up manipulating the weather when all I wanted to do was make the nearest tree or plant bloom so I can progress in the game..
However without a doubt the most frustrating thing about the game which may make me put off from replaying it is the painfully slow, unskippable dialogue that you have to sit through during certain scenes in the game. In fact, when you start the game you are hit with the longest intro you have to sit through as the character tells you the history of the lore. The final complaint about the game is it’s length cuz boy this game felt many hours too long to the point I felt like it was dragging immensely from about half way through.
Despite the few complaints I have about the game, I did enjoy my time playing it and found it to be a refreshing and fun experience. If the small kinks were ironed out it would probably land a lot higher in my books but in its current state the game gets a7/10 from me. Fun for a couple of hours but painful to play after the many missed brush strokes and slowwww story progression.
I played this on the PS3 but it is also available on the PS2, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii and PC
