My first Resident Evil game

When I think back to my earliest gaming memories, the game that comes to mind the most is 2003’s Resident Evil Outbreak. It was my first full horror gaming experience and one of the most fun times I had on the Playstation 2 however I never completed the game as I got stuck on the mission where you are being relentlessly chased by a zombie covered in leeches.

So 20 years later i dove back into the game to finally get through; what I would say is one of the most underrated games in the horror genre. Unlike other games in the franchise, Outbreak has 8 playable characters, each with their own skills and weaknesses and you get to choose who you want to play as in the games 5 chapters. The game was mae to be a multiplayer game however I never got to play the game online but even in solo mode you are teamed up with 2 AI characters each who have the ability to carry up to 4 items each and trust me you will need everyone’s help to get you through most of the missions otherwise you will suffer and you will die. The game is pretty difficult and after completing the first 2 missions on Normal difficulty, I had to lower it down to Easy for the final 3 otherwise I’d probably have chucked my disc across the room.

The game follows the classic survival horror formula of being trapped in a building where you have to find key items, solve puzzles and make your way out of the building whilst trying to survive with limited ammo and inventory space. Complete with 3rd person view, fixed camera angles and tank controls, the experience of playing Outbreak scratched a survival horror itch despite having some underwhelming boss fights. I would recommend every classic Resident Evil fan give this game a shot but also gamers who like old school horror games.

The game is only available on the PlayStation 2
