They never stay dead
In life I’ve only ever been close to breaking my controller twice. Once was fighting The Orphan of Kos in the Bloodborne DLC and the second time was the final chapter of The Evil Within. The difficulty of TEW is no joke. Each chapter provides you with enough ammo for that chapter only so if you’re planning on beating the game with all guns blazing, you will run out of ammo very quickly. Instead, the game forces you to use environmental traps and sneak kills to get through most of it, particularly in the initial few chapters. For this reason, the game does feel quite slow at the beginning.
Sometimes I had just finished sneaking through and killing an entire area of monsters and then beating a boss in the second area only to be greeted with another boss fight immediately after. At the end of the journey I felt so exhausted by everything I experienced in the game that I cancelled my plan to play the sequel immediately after. I just needed a break from all the chaos.
The enemies themselves consist of your standard zombie types for the most part although there are some real nasty lookers starting from half way into the game such as Laura who looks like she was pulled out of The Grudge movies and a monster that looks like a mush of body parts enlarged and mushed together. Almost all the boss fights have different ways of defeating them which makes for a nice change and makes them stand out from each other.
Despite being slightly overwhelming, I did have quite a blast with the game and I would recommend the game to any lover of dark, gritty horror games like Resident Evil 4.
I played the PS4 version of the game, but it is also available on the PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
